Important: Margin vs Markup

Many retail store owners confuse **Margin** and **Markup**. They are calculated differently:

  • Profit Margin: The percentage of profit earned on the **Selling Price**. Formula:Margin % = (Profit / Selling Price) × 100
  • Markup: The percentage added to the **Cost Price** to arrive at the selling price. Formula:Markup % = (Profit / Cost Price) × 100

Example: If you buy a product for ₹100 (CP) and sell it for ₹125 (SP), your **Markup is 25%** but your **Profit Margin is only 20%**!
